On 22 August 1917, exactly 100 ago, the Mark IV F41 Fray Bentos tank performed its most famous attack during the 3rd Battle of Ypres at St. Julien, on Hill 35 with Gallipoli Farm as its objective . The friends of the Tank memorial Ypres Salient (TMYS) so  commemorated this event and paid tribute to the crew of the F41 Fray Bentos at Menin Gate Last Post. This was also done on behalf to the Royal Tank Regiment. The Fray Bentos action was the most decorated tank action ever. The tank ditched in the mud on Hill 35 and its crew was stuck in the tank for 72 hours being attacked by and holding off the Germans. They fortunately succeeded in escaping back to their lines. Lance Corporal Ernest BRAEDY was the only one to die, being shot as he got out to try and access the unditching gear. His remains could be still either in the field or may have been recovered and buried unidentified.  Th crew was awarded these medals:  Captain Donald Richardson and 2nd Lt George Hill who received the Military Cross, Sgt Robert Missen and Gunner William Morrey who were awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal and Gunners Ernest Hayton, Frederick Arthurs, Percy Budd and James Binley who received the Military Medal. Only Gunner James Binley was not injured physically, but was left ‘shocked’. LEST WE FORGET. Earlier that day, the beautiful replica Mark IV tank of "Tank Poelkapelle", though not yet completely finished, had been riding on the very battlefield of where the Fray Bentos did his action on 22-24 August 1917. This also commemorated this famous tank action. On that event relatives of former tank crew members of the Fray Bentos were present too (Gnnr.Arthurs and 2nd. Lt. Hill). A fine event of the Tank Poelkapelle group.

De tank kwam vast te zitten in de modder bij zijn aanval op Hill 35 en de bemanning zat gedurende 72 uur vast in de tank terwijl ze door de Duitsers werden aangevallen en deze probeerden af the houden.  Gelukkig kond de bemaning alsnog nog ontsnappen naar de eigen linies. Lance Corporal Ernest BRAEDY was de enige die in deze actie omkwam. Hij werd neergeschoten door de Duitsers toen hij de balk op de tank wou vrijmaken om de tank weer rijvaaardig te maken. Zijn lichaam bevindt zich mogelijk nog in de omgeving of werd misschien begraven "unknown to God". Aan de bemanning werden deze eretekens uitgereikt: Captain Donald Richardson en 2nd Lt George Hill kregen het Military Cross, Sgt Robert Missen en  Gunner William Morrey kregen de Distinguished Conduct Medal en Gunners Ernest Hayton, Frederick Arthurs, Percy Budd enJames Binley kregen de Military Medal. Enkel Gunner James Binley werd lichameilijk niet verwond maar, maar leed wel aan shock. LEST WE FORGET. Eerder die dag reed de mooie replica Mark IV tank van "Tank Poelkapelle" , hoewel niet niet helemaal afgewerkt, op het veld waar de Fray Bentos aanviel en vast kwam te zitten op 22 (to 24) augustus 1917. Dit herdacht ook deze gebeurtenis. Bij die gelegenheid waren ook familieleden van de bemanning van de Fray Bentos aanwezig ( Gnnr. Arthurs &2nd Lt.  Hill o.a.).
