New Zealand's blackest day commemorated (Frank Mahieu) - Zonnebeke - 12/10/2018
Oct. 12th 1917, first battle of Passchendaele, the blackest day in New Zealand's history was commemorated by a wreath laying service at the New Zealand Memorial Garden at Zonnebeke chateau park.

The ceremony was attended byMr. Gregory Adams, Ambassador of New Zealand and Capt. Shane Arndell, military attaché of New Zealand. Alderman Sabine Vanderhaegen represented the town of Zonnebeke. That 12th October the toll for New Zealand was horrendous: 843 New Zealand soldiers were either dead or lying mortally wounded between the lines in a short time.

E kore rātou e kaumātuatia
Pēnei i a tātou kua mahue nei
E kore hoki rātou e ngoikore
Ahakoa pehea i ngā āhuatanga o te wā
I te hekenga atu o te rā
Tae noa ki te aranga mai i te ata
Ka maumahara tonu tātou ki a rātou
we will remember them

LEST WE FORGET
