Georges Guynemer was born in France on 24th December 1894.
On the outbreak of the First World War he joined the French Air Service.
At Verdun he was shot down and severely wounded.
He returned to the Western Front during the summer of 1916 and flying a Nieuport II at the Battle of the Somme he established himself as France's most outstanding pilot. Guynemer achieved 53 victories before being shot down and killed on 11th September, 1917.
