Lieutenant ALEXIS HANNUM HELMER 1st Bde., Canadian Field Artillery who died on Sunday 2 May 1915. Age 22. Son of Elizabeth I. Helmer, of 122, Gilmour St., Ottawa, and the late Brig. Gen. R. A. Helmer. Looking at his grave on Essex Farm Cemetery, John McCrae wrote the famous poem 'In Flanders Fields' the following day.
The grave was later lost and he is now remembered with honour YPRES (MENIN GATE) MEMORIAL on panel 10.
