New plaque commemorating Father William Doyle (Frank Mahieu) - Langemark-Poelkapelle - 18/08/2018
18/08/2018 - Langemark-Poelkapelle
On 18 August 2018 a commemoration was held for the Irish Army Chaplain Father William Joseph Doyle and a new plaque unveiled by his family at the Irish Memorial at Hazeweidestraat, Langemark in his honour. A commemorative signpost also was unveiled. The ceremony was attended also by Irish officials and military, the Ambassador of the UK Ms. A. Rose, the mayor of Langemark and others.
Father Doyle was a most couragous and selfsacrificing chaplain who saved and administered many soldiers no matter to what creed they belonged and surely worth a VC, however his Irish Catholic roots didn't lead to the VC . He was killed not far from the memorial on 17 August 1917 when both the 16th Irish and 36th Ulster Division attacked in the 3rd Battle of Ypres. He is commemorated on the Menin Gate in Ypres.
