Burial of 13 British soldiers - Wijtschate - 10/10/2019
10/10/2019 - Wijtschate
Burial service for 13 casualties of the Commonwealth Forces will be held at CWGC’s Wytschaete Military Cemetery.
A burial service was held for 13 unknown soldiers of unknown regiments at 11.00am at Wytschaete Military Cemetery.
The casualties were discovered in 2018 as part of an archaeological excavation of a former First World War battlefield near the town of Wytschaete, known as Hill 80 during the war.
Due to the heavy nature of the fighting in this area it has not been possible to identify the individuals. They will be interred together, and their collective grave will be marked with three CWGC headstones. This ensures that those who served and died together, will be buried and commemorated together in perpetuity.
The service has been organised by the Joint Casualty and Compassionate Centre and was attended by British Defence Staff, CWGC staff and local dignitaries. Members of the public were welcome to attend.
