FACES OF WAR (Engl. Below)
Op zaterdag 30 oktober werd op de vestingswallen (*) te Ieper het kunstwerk van Jan Fieuw ingehuldigd. Het werk stond eerder al te Zonnebeke en te Diksmuide opgesteld.
Dit kunstproject 'Faces of War' van 129 dwarsleggers stelt alle in WO I betrokken naties voor. Het kunstwerk is een eerbetoon aan diegenen die het leven lieten tijdens de Eerste Wereldoorlog. Tijdens de Eerste Wereldoorlog gebruikte men deze dwarsliggers om spoorlijnen te maken voor het transport van munitie, wapens, voedsel en troepen. Na WO I schermden de boeren hun velden met deze dwarsliggers af. Jan sculpteerde uit deze balken 129 gezichten van anonieme soldaten uit de 129 landen die betrokken waren bij de 'Groote Oorlog'. Sommige dwarsliggers bevatten nog kogels of granaatscherven. Het kunstwerk blijft er te zien van 30 oktober 2021 tot 9 januari 2022 (* zijde van de kazematten, St. Jacobskerk)
Een sprekende getuigenis van wat zich hier ooit afspeelde en een mooi eerbetoon aan de mensen, soldaten van de zoveel landen die in die 'Groote Oorlog' betrokken waren en de miljoenen die het leven lieten. Prachtwerk Jan !
FACES OF WAR
30 October 2021 'Faces of War', the work of art of the local artist Jan Fieuw was inaugurated near the Menin Gate at the ramparts at Ypres (*). This work of art project consist of 129 railway sleepers, one for each nation involved in the Great War. The project so is a tribute to all who lost their live in the 1st World War. During this war, using wooden beams, different types of railways were constructed so that ammunition, weapons, food, troops and that was needed could be transported. After the war the local farmers used the wooden beams for fencing the meadows and fields. Now Jan has sculptured 129 faces into this beams depicting 129 anonymous soldiers from the 129 nations that were involved in the Great War. Some of these beams still hold bullets or shrapnel from the war. From 30 Oct. 2021 till 9 januari 2022 this work of remembrance can be seen at the ramparts. It’s an appealing witness of what happened here once, and a beautiful tribute to the people, soldiers of so many countries involved in the war and those wo lost their lives in the Great War. Great work Jan !
