Unveiling 49th Battalion (Loyal Edmonton Regiment) monument - Passendale - 24/08/2026
24/08/2026 - Passendale
On Monday 24 August 2026, Zonnebeke Municipal Council, the Passchendaele Museum and the 49th Battalion, Loyal Edmonton Regiment Association organised the ceremonial unveiling of a new Canadian memorial in Passchendaele. This memorial honours the soldiers of the 49th Battalion (Edmonton Regiment) who gave their lives here for freedom.
Today, generations later, the families of these soldiers continue to discover their history and travel thousands of kilometres to visit the places where their ancestors fought. The Municipality of Zonnebeke and the Passchendaele Museum see it as their duty to keep this heritage alive and to pass on the stories of the past to the generations of tomorrow.
Historical background
During the autumn of 1917, the 49th Battalion, as part of the 3rd Canadian Division, played a crucial role in the Battle of Passchendaele. Of the 588 soldiers who went into battle, only 142 returned on 31 October. This battle became one of the bloodiest episodes in the history of the Edmonton Regiment and a symbol of sacrifice and perseverance.
