Burial service for Pte. John Lambert and six unknown soldiers (Frank Mahieu) - Sint-Jan - 30/06/2022
30 June 2022, Burial Service at New Irish Farm Cemetery, Ypres, for
Pte. JOHN LAMBERT of the ROYAL NEWFOUNDLAND REGIMENT and an unknown soldier of the
- the ROYAL FUSILIERS
- the ROYAL INNISKILLING FUSILIERS
- the HAMPSHIRE REGIMENT
- and for two unknown British soldiers and an unknown German soldier.
May they Rest in Peace, Perfect Peace for ever more.
The military protocol and honours were performed by military of the Royal Newfoundland Regiment and the Royal Regiment of Fusiliers, a piper of the Royal Irish Regiment and a firing party of 'The Tigers' the Royal Hampshire Regiment. British, Irish and Belgian officials attended as did people dedicated to remembrance of the fallen.
The new headstones were provided as always by the CWGC who will care for them for ever. The service was conducted by Revd. Shawn Daley and Revd. Gary watts. The ceremony was organised by the MOD JCCC. A group group of family member of Private Lambert form Canada and us attended too.
The remains of these fallen soldiers were found in April 2016 at Langemark-Poelkapelle. The remains of Pte. John Lambert were identified in 2019.
John was born 10 July 1900 in St. John's, Newfoundland , son of Richard and Elizabeth (née Whiteway). He enlisted on 14 August 1916, stating his age was 18 and 3 months though he was only 16 since a month. Later August the journey went on to the UK where he joined the 2nd. Bn. The Newfoundland Rgt. Late April the Regiment went to France. On 7 June 1917 he joined the 1st Bn. The Newfoundland Rgt. The poor lad was only 17 when he was killed on August 16th 1917 during the Battle of Langemark phase of the 3rd. Battle of Ypres. This happened in the area of Ruisseau Farm-Tuffs Farm where the battalion had a aid post. His remains were found only about 100m from this spot.
